Class B asbestos refers to non-friable asbestos materials. That means that materials are – in general – in a solid state and therefore less dangerous than friable (disrupted) asbestos materials. Non-friable asbestos is typically mixed with a bonding agent and is in a solid state. Non-friable asbestos makes up a significant portion of the asbestos materials found in buildings in Melbourne and along the Mornington Peninsula.
There is no “standard” appearance for asbestos – which is why it is important to test any suspected materials before you build or move those materials. Asbestos may be grey, brown, blue, green, or contained in materials like tiles or insulation. Colour can change over time and a professional assessment can be almost impossible to distinguish from non-threatening building materials.
